Berea Branch

Large Meeting Room (100)

Enjoy a presentation by Jay Ryan, a longtime astronomy educator, and learn what to expect during the first eclipse such as this since 1806.

Part of the series Our Place in Space: The Ongoing Adventures of Us Among the Stars, presented in collaboration with Baldwin Wallace University. See all events in the series.

A total eclipse of the sun will occur over Ohio on Monday, April 8, 2024, during which Cleveland and all of Cuyahoga County will experience about 3 minutes and 50 seconds of totality. This is the first such eclipse over Ohio since 1806, when Cleveland was just a tiny frontier settlement at the mouth of the Cuyahoga.

We have much to understand and appreciate about this rare and special natural phenomenon, and we will also address misconceptions about eclipses and eye safety. Learn some eclipse facts in this colorful, illustrated program.

Presenter Jay Ryan shares more about the eclipse at eclipseovercleveland.com.

About the branch

Opened in 1924, the Berea Branch was the third branch to join the Cuyahoga County Public Library system. It was initially housed in City Hall from 1924-1939 and then a small storefront in 1957 before moving to a standalone building. The branch is located adjacent to beautiful Coe Lake Park.
